• While this pulsed / sampled mode of operation can be run reasonably fast ( several MHz with pulses on the order of tens of nanoseconds with a good device ), I don't believe it's possible to operate very high gain APDs in breakdown continuously for risk of various destructive breakdown mechanisms.
